An ancient rural castle, then a stately villa and then a farm, the first records of which date back to 1139 when Pignano came under the dominion of the Bishop of Volterra. In 1252 it passed under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Volterra, and was then reduced to a villa by the end of the 13th century. The small church of S. Bartolomeo became a parish church in the 13th century. With the complete subjection to Florence, it became a rural villa surrounded by numerous farms.
