Monteverdi’s history began in 754 with the foundation of the Abbey of San Pietro a Palazzuolo by Benedictine monks, led by the Longobard Walfredo, legendary founder of the Della Gherardesca counts. The ancient, picturesque village still retains its medieval structure, as does the nearby village of Canneto, characterised by stone houses, narrow streets, ancient fortifications and tower-houses. In the Monteverdi Marittimo area is the Monterufoli – Caselli Reserve, a fine example of unspoilt nature.
