Suddenly the Apennines in a Mediterranean environment. Very little has remained of the nucleus of silver firs (Abies alba) and douglas firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii) planted for experimental purposes since the 1930s. The plants, outside their typical range, have suffered greatly from the succession of dry summers. However, the particular coolness of the slope allows for widespread regeneration.
