Monterufoli and Caselli have extensive outcrops of serpentine rock. These are ancient ocean beds from about 180 million years ago. This rock is truly hostile to plants, but for this very reason it is home to very important habitats with sparse shrub vegetation known as garrigue, with herbaceous species living exclusively in contact with these rocks and extraordinary spring blooms.
