The gate, of Etruscan origin, is contemporary with the more famous Porta all’Arco. After the the surrounding walls were narrowed centuries ago, it remained isolated and, in fact, useless, but its robustness has allowed its preservation for centuries. The origin of the name, which refers to the pagan goddess, is unknown, although it has always been said in Volterra that all brides go through the gate on their way to get married: perhaps, therefore, an ancient link with the goddess of the moon, natural cycles and fertility cannot be completely excluded…
