Located at the foot of the northern slope of the hill of Volterra, the small village of Prato d’Era is characterised by the large quantity of water that has always allowed the existence of several water mills. The mills were equipped with a horizontal water wheel, called ‘ritrecine’, and a system of millraces and water basins that were used as a water supply and were arranged along the stream feeding them one after the other.
