A low, dense and difficult to penetrate forest, with a prevalence of evergreen species, is known as a ‘forteto’. Its appearance mainly derives from past and continuous coppicing of pre-existing holm-oak forests. Porcupines and wild boar are among the main inhabitants of this area.
