Volterra’s psychiatric hospital, one of the largest and most modern in Italy, began as a begging hospital in 1884 and remained in operation until 1978, when the Basaglia Law was implemented. The cemetery, called San Finocchi, was used for the burial of inmates of the asylum who were not claimed by their families from 1943 until 1977.
