In the shade of the holm-oaks and other species, the yew tree (Taxus baccata) grows vigorously. It is known as the tree of death because of a toxic substance, taxin, which is contained in all parts of the plant except the pulp of the fruit. The yew tree population of Monterufoli is among the most important in Italy and represents evidence of the flora before the Ice Ages.
