On the sunny and exposed slopes, the serpentines form soils that are hostile to plants. The vegetation consists of sparse, twisted shrubs and highly specialised herbaceous plants exclusive to these rocks, which together form what are known as serpentine plants. Rare and valuable are the numerous spring flowers.
