This is a scenic ring-route with no particular technical difficulties. The itinerary starts right near the edge of the Balze chasm and is designed to allow people to discover these weird, sharp-looking shapes created by erosion: the Balze and the Calanchi and the typical agriculture and pastoral farming based system of these bizarre hills. The route features long panoramic stretches over the clay hills that stretch as far as the eye can see until they reach the sea, scarred on the steep southern slopes by the sharp ridges of the Calanchi showing their naked whiteness in the sun while the softer, less steep slopes are farmed with cereals. \nThe Balze, with their steep walls gilded by sand and sandstone, are the result of a spectacular natural phenomenon (still going on today) in which land gradually slides on the sediments left by a sea 2.5 million years ago and they are particularly stunning at sunset. The Badia, a massive Camaldolese monastery of medieval origin which looks as if it had been hanging somewhere between the earth and the sky for its 10 centuries of history proudly stands, as a monument of extraordinary importance and a place of great charm and mystery and defies the chasm of the Balze that advances inexorably. \nLeaving the Abbey behind you can take a detour on a dirt road to reach the small church of San Cipriano, an exceptional watching point to enjoy the Calanche which here are of notable beauty and show differences in length and height. \nThese hills are home to the renowned PDO cheese “Pecorino delle Balze Volterrane”, typically with vegetable rennet from wild thistle which is abundant in the pastures. Once you reach the end of this dirt road also called the “Path of Balze and Calanchi” you will find some possible detours that will allow you to easily reach the environmental sculptures of the artist Mauro Staccioli, extraordinary expressions of “land art” that interpret the essence of the artist’s “places of experience” with installations that frame the poignant landscape of the crags, gullies and windswept hills dominated from above by Volterra.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Balze<\/a>, uno dei luoghi pi\u00f9 affascinanti ed inquietanti del Volterrano, una gigantesca voragine che incide profondamente il versante NW del colle. L\u2019estesa frana \u00e8 originata dall'azione erosiva delle acque meteoriche che infiltratesi attraverso il deposito sabbioso sommitale (permeabile) del colle di Volterra giungono a sciogliere le argille sottostanti (impermeabili) provocando cos\u00ec il crollo progressivo degli spessori sabbiosi ed arenacei ad esse sovrapposti. Il fenomeno erosivo, attivo da alcuni secoli ha coinvolto nel proprio avanzamento parte di una necropoli etrusca e le Chiese di S. Clemente e di <a href=\"https:\/\/volterratur.it\/?post_type=poi&p=58977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S.Giusto<\/a> al Botro, divorate dal precipizio nel sec. XVII.  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Dal parcheggio in prossimit\u00e0 delle Balze, \u00e8 possibile percorrere un tratto a piedi lungo <a href=\"https:\/\/volterratur.it\/?post_type=poi&p=48692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">le antiche mura etrusche del IV sec. A. Il monastero venne edificato per volere del vescovo di <a href=\"https:\/\/volterratur.it\/volterra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volterra<\/a> Gunfredo nell'anno Mille; l\u2019edificio con tutte le sue propriet\u00e0 venne poi affidato alla cura dei benedettini, i quali nel corso del XIII secolo furono sostituiti dai monaci camaldolesi. Nei primi anni del Seicento inizi\u00f2 la frana delle Balze, che nei secoli successivi arriv\u00f2 a minacciare da vicino anche la Badia. Poi nei primi anni dell'Ottocento il monastero fu soppresso temporaneamente dal governo di occupazione francese, ma quando i camaldolesi poterono tornarvi, pochi anni dopo, nel 1861, a causa anche del terremoto del 1846, abbandonarono definitivamente l\u2019edificio, per paura delle Balze.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Il monastero \u00e8 oggi un\u2019unica struttura divisa in due parti ben distinte: la chiesa, pressoch\u00e9 distrutta, di cui rimangono solo scarsi resti dei muri perimetrali che conservano ancora la struttura di et\u00e0 romanica, e l\u2019edificio residenziale, con il chiostro, il refettorio ed i quartieri dei monaci, che invece hanno un aspetto pi\u00f9 moderno dovuto alla ricostruzione voluta dall\u2019abate Mario Maffei nel Cinquecento. I calanchi sono facilmente identificabili come un\u2019area, generalmente con contorno a ferro di cavallo, costituita da un sistema di solchi o di vallecole, con i fianchi estremamente ripidie denudati, separati gli uni dagli altri da sottili creste argillose con un profilo molto scosceso. The itinerary starts right near the edge of the Balze chasm and is designed to allow people to discover these weird, sharp-looking shapes created by erosion: the Balze and the Calanchi and the typical agriculture and pastoral farming based system of these bizarre hills. The route features long panoramic stretches over the clay hills that stretch as far as the eye can see until they reach the sea, scarred on the steep southern slopes by the sharp ridges of the Calanchi showing their naked whiteness in the sun while the softer, less steep slopes are farmed with cereals.<br \/>\nThe Balze, with their steep walls gilded by sand and sandstone, are the result of a spectacular natural phenomenon (still going on today) in which land gradually slides on the sediments left by a sea 2.5 million years ago and they are particularly stunning at sunset. The Badia, a massive Camaldolese monastery of medieval origin which looks as if it had been hanging somewhere between the earth and the sky for its 10 centuries of history proudly stands, as a monument of extraordinary importance and a place of great charm and mystery and defies the chasm of the Balze that advances inexorably.<br \/>\nLeaving the Abbey behind you can take a detour on a dirt road to reach the small church of San Cipriano, an exceptional watching point to enjoy the Calanche which here are of notable beauty and show differences in length and height.<br \/>\nThese hills are home to the renowned PDO cheese “Pecorino delle Balze Volterrane”, typically with vegetable rennet from wild thistle which is abundant in the pastures.
